Florida public adjuster: No holiday break for property insurance claims
Between kitchen accidents from careless cooking, and faulty heating appliances Florida public adjuster Tutwiler and Associates suggests policyholders take careful steps to prevent house and business fires during this peak fire-loss claims season.

While the holidays are a time meant for making memories, licensed public adjusters hear some of the worst seasonal mishaps: for homeowners it may be a kitchen grease fire caused by a mishandled turkey, an unattended fireplace, even a misplaced forgotten candle have resulted in a spike in home insurance claims nationwide each November and December.
Just as the 2010 hurricane season officially ended November 30, Florida public adjusters now enter this high-claim season that finds many of us at our most vulnerable to careless fire loss accidents often with devastating consequences.
The licensed and certified public adjusters at Tutwiler and Associates, which operates throughout Florida and in nine other states as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands, say they deal with a myriad of residential and commercial fire losses this time of year, most of which can be prevented provided homeowners and business owners check their heating and electrical systems.
A homeowner's checklist should include a quick inspection of his smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, while business owners should regularly check their sprinkler systems, advises Charles R. "Dick" Tutwiler, founder and CEO of Florida public adjuster firm Tutwiler and Associates. Property owners should also have adequate first-party property insurance coverage to help recover from a fire loss in a timely manner, he adds.
"As bad as a partial or total loss to a home or business can be to the property owner, the aftermath can be much worse when folks realize that their insurance will not adequate cover their losses," says Tutwiler, who has worked as a certified Florida public adjuster for more than 37 years.
Before you baste that turkey, licensed public adjusters urge you to ask your insurance agent three things: Am I adequately covered for the risks that increase during the winter holiday season? Can I get an update on my building and contents dollar limits? And what loss mitigation safety information can you provide me to better educate me about the risk of a fire loss?
Tutwiler encourages families and business owners to implement an emergency fire escape route, and make sure that everyone understands how easily a fire can overwhelm the most precious time of year.
